In May of 2014 we headed to Idaho with the dogs for our anniversary. Our main destination was Twin Falls, but we were so close to Boise that we had to go and check out the state capitol building. However, it is about a 14 hr drive from Denver, so we didn’t get into Boise area until late afternoon. We had to wait unti Monday. We were tired from driving anyway, so we checked into the hotel and grabbed burgers at Big Juds. We didn’t know much about Boise but had watched Adam on Man Vs Food and decided to try some of the places that he visited while in the area. The burger was great but I wasn’t too impressed with the fries. They were thick and not crispy like I like. Oh well, it was good and we were hungry. Didn’t do much but have a couple of drinks and watched some t.v.

The next day we went to church at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church. It was a nice service even though we ended up late because the time was wrong on the webiste – oops. They forgave us and we didn’t miss the sermon. All was good. Lol After lunch we found a grocery store and grabbed some groceries for lunch and ended up having a nice picnic lunch at Julia Davis Park. It is a great park and we had a nice time letting the dogs run around. We did see some paddle boats and thought it would have been fun but no dogs allowed. Oh well, we still had a great time. Once we finished our picnic we drove around and saw the city of Boise and drove by the other Bronco Stadium. lol While we were driving around we decided to head up to Table Rock. It was a great view of the city on one side, and the valley on the other. And it was a nice little walk to the top. It got a little windy, so we headed back down and went to dinner. We decided to check out another place that was on Man Vs Food.

We ended up at Rockies Diner, home of the Johnny B. Goode challenge. This is a fun little 50’s style diner with good old American burgers. It is also the place where Adam took on the challenge to try to win a Fender guitar. This challenge consists of 3 different parts, the first part is a ridiculous cheeseburger topped with a hot dog and pastrami, the 2nd part is a large order of chili cheese fries and finally wash it all down with a large milkshake. And in order to complete the challenge you must finish all of this food, all 6.5 pounds of it, in under a half an hour. It is a lot of food, but Adam did it. We were hoping to see someone do it while we were there and we were accommodated. Someone did, but failed with about 7 mins left on the clock. At least he didn’t get sick, lol It was a fun place with little juke boxes on the table and the waitress’ wear skates. Definitely a place I would go to again if we are even in Boise again.

The next morning we got up early and headed to the Boise State Capitol. It was a nice, and we did spend quite a time walking around and looking at the two different chambers and taking pictures. We found out that Lewiston, Idaho briefly served as Idaho's capitol from the formation of Idaho Territory in 1863 until an act of the territorial legislature moved the capitol to Boise City on December 24, 1864. A few years after Idaho gained statehood the construction on the original capitol building began in the summer of 1906, and was completed in 1920. The architects who developed the building were John E. Tourtellotte and Charles Hummel. Tourtellotte and Hummel used four different types of marble from various locations: red marble from Georgia, gray marble from Alaska, green marble from Vermont, and black marble from Italy. The most distinguishable feature to the capitol building is the dome. On top of this dome is a bronze eagle, 5 feet 7 inches (1.7 m) high. The capitol building is 208 feet (63 m) high and takes up a total of 201,720 square feet (18,740 m2), and there is over 50,000 square feet (4,600 m2) of artistically carved marble. It is a beautiful building.

We left the capitol and started heading toward Twin Falls. We ended up stopping at the Bruneau Sand Dunes which is about 64 miles south of Boise, ID. It is so cool. The park boasts the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America with a peak rising 470 feet above the surrounding desert floor. We ended up having another picnic lunch by the dunes. It was nice even though it was a little windy still. We walked around a little bit but never did go play. Maybe next time, lol. We left there and made our way to Twin Falls. We had a great time in Boise and would like to go back again someday. Here are some fun things we would like to do next time.
